As part of VCU School of Pharmacy Alumni Weekend, CPPI is excited to host an in-person panel discussion, offering expert guidance on payment for pharmacy services through the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) within the context of statewide protocols and collaborative practice agreements.
 
Panelists - John Bucheit (VCU), JoeMichael Fusco (DMAS), Tana Kaefer (Bremo Pharmacy), Caroline Juran (BOP) - will discuss regulatory requirements for both practice sites and pharmacists, strategies for and challenges in implementing billing of pharmacist services provided under collaborative practice agreements and the role of academia in assisting in the successful translation of legislation into pharmacy practice.

Panelist:

Caroline Juran, R.Ph., D.Ph

Caroline Juran HeadshotCaroline Juran has been employed by the Virginia Department of Health Professions since 2005 and currently serves as Executive Director of the Virginia Board of Pharmacy.  Prior to her employment with the department, she practiced in long term care and community pharmacy, held certification as a geriatric pharmacist, and served as a preceptor.  Ms. Juran completed her studies at The College of William and Mary and graduated from the School of Pharmacy at the Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995.  She recently served as Chairman of the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy. 


JoeMichael Fusco, Pharm.D.

JoeMichael Fusco HeadshotDr. JoeMichael Fusco currently serves as the MCO Pharmacy Compliance Manager at the Virginia Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS), Virginia’s Medicaid program. After receiving his Pharm.D. from West Virginia University, he began his career in the Medicaid space as the Assistant Director of the Rational Drug Therapy Program within the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy Pharmaceutical Systems and Policies Department. In this role he worked to advance the West Virginia Medicaid pharmacy benefit by developing programs to address chronic disease state management, chronic pain management, and substance use disorder. After 6 years of program development and implementation, he moved into his current state government role with The Commonwealth. Dr. Fusco has spearheaded the enrollment of pharmacists as providers with DMAS and has worked to create pathways to payment for clinical services provided by pharmacists, pharmacy interns, and pharmacy technicians. 


John Bucheit

John Bucheit headshotJohn Bucheit is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science at Virginia Commonwealth University. He specializes in ambulatory care/primary care pharmacy and practices under a collaborative agreement at CrossOver Healthcare Ministry, a Patient-Centered Medical Home. Additionally, he serves as the primary preceptor for the ambulatory care residency at VCU School of Pharmacy. Areas of interest in research include hypertension, diabetes, and interprofessional education.

 


Tana Kaefer, Pharm.D

Tana Kaefer HeadshotDr. Kaefer graduated from VCU School of Pharmacy in 2004 and completed a Community-Based Practice Residency at Bremo Pharmacy. Dr. Kaefer is the Director Clinical Services at Bremo Pharmacies, an independently owned pharmacy in Richmond, VA with 2 locations, Bremo Pharmacy and Bremo LTC Pharmacy. Bremo has always been an innovative company on the forefront of emerging pharmacy practices.  Dr. Kaefer prides herself on working for such a company and is constantly looking for ways to improve care and services for her patients in the community setting.  Dr. Kaefer also serves as a Clinical Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmacotherapy and Outcomes Science at VCU School of Pharmacy.  In this role she precepts IPPE and APPE students as well as serving as the primary site preceptor for the Bremo Community-based Pharmacy Residency Program. She has been very involved on both a state and local level in VPhA and RPhA and is currently serving as the lead luminary with CPESN VA.
